Today’s Doctors of Optometry
Optometrists’ education and scope of responsibility have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Doctors of optometry are independent primary health care providers who are trained and state licensed to examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures as well as diagnose related systemic conditions. While serving the primary eye care needs of the American public, today’s doctors of optometry recognize that responsible, quality care must involve the patient’s total health.
Doctors of optometry work closely with other health professionals by consulting with family practitioners, pediatricians, neurologists, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and others when treatment is required outside the scope of their practice. This consultation process is two-way, and as the health care delivery system continues to change, this
Inter-professional consultation and concurrent care will become more important.
The profession of optometry is constantly evolving to meet the needs of patients, to progress with technological advancements, and to match the great strides made in the education of optometrists. With this as a basis, optometrists have become increasingly involved in practicing in hospitals as the scope of eye and vision care services optometrists can provide becomes broader. These services include not only optometric specialty areas such as contact lenses, low vision, and vision rehabilitation, but also pre and postoperative eye care, emergency eye care services, and the use of pharmaceuticals in the diagnosis of treatment of eye disease.

Julia Chang, OD, PhD
Dr. Chang received her PhD in Biology from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She has many years of post-doctoral research experience in the prestigious Scripps Research Institute at La Jolla, CA, and the department of Ophthalmology in the University of Minnesota. After graduating from the New England College of Optometry, Dr. Chang has been providing optometric eye care in the Boston area since 2006. In addition to primary optometric care, disease management and assisting in the care of patients with laser vision correction/cataract surgery, she has highly specialized expertise in fitting contact lens for complicated corneas.
Dr. Chang has extensive experience of fitting the SynergEyes Hybrid lens. She was actually one of the first practitioners to fit SynergEyes ClearKone lenses in the Boston area. The hybrid technology combines a rigid gas permeable contact lens at the center with a surrounding soft contact lens skirt. It allows these lenses to offer the crisp vision of a gas permeable lens with the superior comfort of a soft lens, truly the best of both worlds. This lens design is excellent for individuals with a high astigmatism prescription or irregular corneas, including keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration and corneas after surgeries.
Dr. Chang is also a certified Orthokeratologist. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a FDA-approved non-surgical alternative to free you from glasses or contact lenses during the day for people who have myopia and astigmatism. Ortho-K is a therapy that gently reshapes one's cornea to correct the refractive errors by wearing a custom designed retainer lenses while sleeping at night (similar to wearing braces for correcting crooked teeth). The result is clear vision throughout the day without glasses, contacts or surgeries. Unlike LASIK, it is reversible without any surgical risk. This FDA-approved treatment has shown its safety and efficacy for patients of all ages. It is very exciting to note that the recent studies have shown great results for controlling myopia progression with Ortho-K in children.
As an Optometrist with a scientific background, her goal is to provide the best potential vision to all patients with the most technological designs supported by strong research. To find out if you are a good candidate for Hybrid lenses or Ortho-K, Dr. Chang will be available on Mondays and Thursdays for appointments at the Advanced Vision Center. We look forward to seeing you."
